A very interesting scientific paper is circulating on the internet which claims that the CBD substance from cannabis has considerable potential to both prevent the infection that creates COVID and to treat the resulting disease. The work, which is backed by researchers from the American Oregon State Universityhas been featured in a number of respected media outlets around the world, including the renowned online magazine Forbes. The scientific team was led by researcher Richard van Breemen from the so-called Global Hemp Innovation Centre (GHIC).
CBD oil for coronavirus? Supposedly prevents infection
In fact, experts from the United States of America have found that cannabinoids, the active substances from cannabis (or even marijuana), can prevent the virus from penetrating human cells and laying the foundations for the development of a disease called COVID-19. And not only that. We've also learned that CBD products could also serve as a potential cure for those who already have COVID. This finding goes hand -in-hand with a finding that was learned about from Austrian docs just last year.
"These cannabinoids, isolated or in cannabis extracts, which are orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe use in humans, have the potential to prevent and also treat SARS-CoV-2 infection," reads a portion of the abstract of a scientific study that focused on CBD and coronavirus infection from the scientific paper
So what cannabinoids are we talking about? Several substances are mentioned in the work of experts, including CBGA (cannabigeroleic acid) or CBDA (cannabidiol), which, like CBD and CBG are part of the chemical structure of the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are said to be able to bind to the so-called SPIKE protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, essentially preventing it from entering cells and creating a potentially dangerous infection. How much effectiveness this is, however, we have no idea at the moment.
Too early to jump to conclusions
There is too little credible data available yet for anyone to publicly declare that CBD for coronavirus actually works. Yes, we have evidence from Austria, where they administered CBD to 19 COVID patients, but even that is not enough. We need a few more similar studies and studies from the field, which will make it possible to carry out a so-called meta-analysis. This will actually be a combination of all the available scientific data on CBD and the coronavirus, which will give us detailed information on whether cannabidiol can actually effectively both prevent and treat the infection.
Doctors gave CBD to 19 COVID patients
Back in 2021, a rather interesting study was carried out in an Austrian hospital to see if CBD (Cannabidiol) could speed up the healing process for an infectious disease called COVID-19, which is caused by the so-called coronavirus. The result? Those who were given high doses of CBD went home a few days earlier than those who were given a so-called placebo with no real effect. The study may have been small and short, but at least we have an idea of what marijuana's active ingredients are capable of.

However, the Austrian doctors' findings have now been confirmed by the aforementioned research from the United States, which claims that cannabinoids from the cannabis plant have the potential to both prevent the disease and treat the already-occurring disease COVID.
CBD probably lowers your risk of getting COVID
That cannabinoids, including CBD, can reduce the risk of the infectious disease COVID-19 is even suggested by a recent Canadian study that analysed more than 400 different varieties of cannabis. As a result, experts at the University of Lethbridge in Calgary, Canada, found that about 70 varieties offer combinations of active ingredients that can defend against potential coronavirus infection quite effectively. Some of them were so effective that they managed to reduce the number of so-called viral receptors by up to 73 per cent.
