Up to 85% of CBD products in Switzerland do not meet the safety criteria. This is according to a comprehensive analysis of the local consumer market by experts from the Swiss Association of Cantonal Chemists, as reported by ilesol.com, which refers to a recently published press release from the association.

"The aim of the campaign was to assess marketability in relation to the formulation, in particular adherence to maximum THC levels and illegal medicinal CBD claims."

Up to 85% of CBD products do not meet the criteria

Swiss experts carried out a so-called safety analysis of 100 freely available products from the cannabis plant containing the active ingredient CBD (Cannabidiol) during the past year 2021 . However, they were surprised by the result, because up to 85 percent of them did not meet the safety criteria. This means, in other words, that 85 CBD products out of the 100 that could be bought on the Swiss consumer market were not suitable for consumption or any other use.

But the best part of all this is that up to 73 percent of all CBD products analyzed were subsequently banned. Manufacturers had to pull a total of 43 CBD oils from store shelves. In fact, only three CBD drops out of 46 passed the safety analysis, so no biggie. Reasons for the ban included the use of unauthorised hemp extract or the use of extract with very high THC levels, although up to 1 per cent is allowed in Switzerland.

"The results of the study, with a complaint rate of 85%, point to a bleak situation in which market participants are insufficiently or not at all aware of the self-regulation that they are legally obliged to carry out. "Jasminka Šikić from ilesol.com

The so-called laboratory analyses that CBD producers attach to their products tell us how much of the active ingredients they contain, not whether they are safe to consume. It's basically just a sort of formal guarantee that the customer will get what they order. Even so, it does occasionally happen that the levels of active ingredients in CBD oil do not match what is officially on the paperwork. And this was one of the two main problems in the above analysis. The other is the presence of substances that safe CBD drops should not contain at all.
